Literacy Narrative

Throughout history, people have fought for education for many reasons. With equal education everyone has the opportunity to become someone that they dream to be. People immigrate from their home country here so that their families have the opportunity to get a better education and future than they would gotten have in their country. In my case, my family made the choice to sacrifice their lives by leaving everything behind. Some of them started college and never finished. Other just finished high school. They wanted my cousins, sisters, and I, to have a better education and future. My ability to go to college and begin my professional career will ensure a brighter future and will make my family proud.

The image of “The problem We All Live With” by Normal Rockwell makes me feel like anything is possible because the image is of a little girl who was scared. She was brave and set an example for others. She had to live in a place of racism and it’s something that’s not easy no matter what age you are. Even though in the image she is being protected by bodyguards, they can’t protect her from hateful words that are around her. In a way, the little girl looks like an angel because she is wearing all white, which can be interpreted as a message that she is from God to help the integration of blacks and whites.

The little girl in the painting “The Problem We All Live With” by Normal Rockwell reminds me of myself on the first day of school in a new country. Walking with confidence being protected by my mother who walked in front of me. I feel connected to this painting because I can relate in so many levels. She was a young girl in a strange environment with people around her and she was brave.

The political cartoon of “Education Secretary Betsy DeVos” by Glenn McCoy, made angry because Betsy DeVos is someone of higher status and superiority. She is someone wants to make education limited to people that can afforded it by creating more charter schools. She is someone that cares only about making money. Even though when she tried to go in a school she was treated nice, it does not mean what she is doing is not wrong. The protestors were peaceful because they were smart and new that a person like Betsy DeVos would not be able to win with hate.

The painting of the little girl from “The Problem We All Live With” by Normal Rockwell is a nonfictional piece of art. The paint was created to bring people the awareness that this color young girl has to face the demons of the big bad world just because she was equal education for her and everyone else. Her actions changed the course of history when it comes to taking actions on the first steps having the same education as whites during the 1900s. The political cartoon of “Education Secretary Betsy DeVos” by Glenn McCoy is a fictional cartoon. The actions being shown in this cartoon didn’t exactly happened during her visit to the school. The cartoon of Betsy DeVos was being compare to the one of the little girl from the painting by Normal Rockwell. The painting and the cartoon are similar but the two have different messages behind them. One wants to show the desire and strength it takes to get an education and the other one wants to destroy the possibility of everyone getting free education.

Betsy DeVos is someone who should not be on the board of education. She is someone who is trying to destroy the future of this country by trying to get rip off public education. Without public education being available many people in this country would not be where they are today. I personally don’t like Betsy DeVos because education for me is important and it hits me personally because all my life I have been in the public education system. In my opinion people that are in privates’ schools don’t value education as much as public school students. Being in the public-school system enriches you with multi-cultural people, you make connections with people from different countries and cultures. The challenges and experiences that students face in the public system helps them prepare for the world around them and the workforce in this country.
