The Snack Machin

Dear Who Ever Cares,

In my FIQWS Composition class, my professor asked us to create a portfolio website. This is where I will post my past assignments clean and edited. This is my first time creating a website and I found it easier than expected. When she told the class about creating a portfolio website I liked the idea of learning how to create a website. I understood better once I saw the example my teacher provided for me. I felt less nervous about how to go about writing my portfolio reflections. Once she gave us the chart of the Writing Section Learning Outcomes, I got to see what I needed to include in the reflection.

For my first assignment I had to do a literacy narrative. I compared Betsy DeVos painting with a painting of a little girl on her way to school during the Civil Rights Movement. I really enjoyed working on this assignment because I got to create a story based on what I was seeing and interpreted what may have gone one during that time.

“Throughout the process of writing my Literacy Narrative I didn’t know what to write. In the beginning I was so confused because I didn’t know how we were supposed to write a Literacy Narrative base on two pictures. At the end of the tutoring section I decided to ask my tutor about it even if he is not supposed to tutor me on this class. He was also confused on how to do it because he thought that a literacy narrative is supposed to be about your life not about pictures, but because the two pictures are tie to education. We decided to tide it to why I came to this country and that was for a better education. Meaning that the public education system here in the United States is much better than the education system in the Dominican Republic.”

While writing the Literacy Narrative, I recognized and practiced writing key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing the Literacy Narrative. The assignment was to write about two images and to include the key elements of a rhetorical situation: purpose, audience, genre, stance, and media/design. In my Reflection of my Literacy Narrative, I analyzed my writing process. And how I came to write the conclusion on what I was going to write in my Literacy Narrative.

For my second assignment I had to do an Exploratory Essay. The Exploratory Essay helped me revise and edit the first draft of my essay. In my Exploratory Essay creating an outline was what help me understand the structure of the essay. It help me planned my essay correctly.

“While writing this exploratory essay I had to think back to what we read and talked about on Freud’s lectures. I chose to write about “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe. I wrote about this story because I love how insane it is. I found a lot of details that can be related to Freud’s lecture. The narrator uses alcohol to chimney sweep the mind. Since childhood through adulthood the main narrator repressed emotions which he let out by drinking. Pluto ignoring the main character drove him insane. He feels that Pluto is avoiding him so he stabs the cat in the eye and after he hung the cat of a tree in the backyard. He found another cat that resembled Pluto and that cat followed him home.”

For my third assignment I had to write a critical research paper. In the critical research paper I had to do research of my own to back up my argument. With this paper I had to practice MLA citation in my essay and in the work cited page.

“Psychologists themselves are laymen to the artistic gift, because they don’t understand how someone suffering from mental issues can be pulled back into society and can use music as an outlet for his emotions. According to the unnamed narrator, “At first, Isabel would write me, saying how nice it was that Sonny was so serious about his music and how, as soon as he came in from school, or wherever he had been when he was supposed to be at school, he went straight to that piano and stayed there until suppertime” (Baldwin 12). Sonny in that moment knew that music would be his ticket out of Harlem. He was serious about his talent. Baldwin is critiques society by the way he talks about Harlem and the influence that Harlem has on its people. Anyone who has the opportunity to get out and not to come back.”
